The University of Surrey (awarded its Royal Charter in 1966) is home to over 15,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students on campus in the Southeast of England and remotely and has a long history of excellence in teaching and research. Within two pan-University Institutes (Sustainability and People-Centred AI) and a number of cutting-edge research centres the University is committed to generating high-quality research that tackles some of the biggest global challenges of today and make a difference to the lives of people in our local community, across the UK and around the world. The University was awarded the Queen’s Anniversary Prize for its teaching and research in food and nutrition in 2017 with the Department of Nutritional Sciences and Food and Consumer Behaviour and Health Research Centre specifically commended for their pioneering research in obesity, diabetes, osteoporosis, vitamin D, iodine and food labelling.
Role in the project
The University of Surrey, with a team of experts in micronutrient status, function and assessment (Dr Kathryn Hart & Prof Susan Lanham-New & – Vitamin D, Dr Andrea Darling – UK Biobank, Prof Margaret Rayman – Selenium, Dr Sarah Bath – Iodine, Dr Kourosh Ahmadi – Vitamin B12), will facilitate collation and analysis of a range of existing UK intake and status data representing populations of relevance to the Zero Hidden Hunger EU project from key National databases including the Royal College of General Practitioners database and the National Diet and Nutrition Survey. Samples will also be requested from the UK Biobank for analysis to address gaps in the existing micronutrient status knowledge base. Lead by Prof Lanham-New and Dr Hart, Surrey will specifically contribute to Work Packages 2 and 3 and lead on Task 3.3.
