About

What is Zero Hidden Hunger EU?

Zero Hidden Hunger EU is a Horizon Europe-funded research project that aims to quantify the true prevalence of micronutrient deficiencies in Europe and to develop context-specific, food-focused strategies to ensure an appropriate supply of vitamins and minerals from sustainable diets.

The initiative will be based on priority biomarker and micronutrient consumption data from European populations, as well as associated health expenses, with a focus on high-risk population subgroups, such as children, adolescents, women of reproductive age, older adults and immigrant/ethnic minority groups and those affected by social inequality.

The project, which will run for four years (2024-2028), is being coordinated by University College Cork, Ireland.

The main objectives of Zero Hidden Hunger EU are:

To generate accurate measures of micronutrient deficiencies prevalence using priority biomarker and intake data from diverse European populations. By focusing on high-risk groups, such as marginalized communities and vulnerable populations, the project aims to uncover the true extent of the issue and its associated health costs.

To develop context-specific, food-focused strategies to ensure adequate micronutrient deficiencies intake from sustainable sources. By leveraging existing data resources and applying them in integrated dietary modeling strategies, the consortium aims to deliver tailored solutions that address the root causes of micronutrient deficiencies across Europe.

To deliver credible evidence enabling policymakers and food system actors to deliver food-focused strategies to eradicate micronutrient deficiencies from Europe.
